Our
goal is EDUCATION....we
believe the world has
become so modernized
that the children need
a place to learn and
see how life was lived,
and the way life was
in the 1800’s.
With our original grist
mill that is still in
original working
condition, the children
can see how corn was
produced into products
that were used for food.
We
offer a guided tour that
last about 1-2 hours
(time depends on amount
of children touring).
The tour will start with
the way corn was
planted, raised,
shelled, then ground
into grits or
cornmeal. Each
child will have the
hands on experience of
planting, and shelling
the corn. Then we
explain how it was taken
to the mill to be
ground. After the
history is explained,
the mill will then be
put into working
operation for each child
to see the stones at
work and feel the
cornmeal as it comes
from the stones after
being
ground. The
children are then walked
around the mill to view
the stones, belts, and
pulleys at work.
We talk about the dress
attire (the staff is
dress in period attire)
used in the 1800’s for
the adults and children,
trading, toys and crafts
made and used around the
farms and mill.
This is just a start to
what is
learned....contact us
for additional
information or to book
your tour today.
We
have a new education
booklet for each child
that tours with a school
tour. This booklet is
more education than
before, it has diagrams
and questions for each
child to review to test
the knowledge they have
learned from the guided
tour. Request your
sample copy today.
We
are also offering a corn
husk doll class with
each tour. Each
child will be able to
hand make a doll, as we
explain how toy were
made in the 1800’s.
The children really
become creative and
enjoy this part of the
tour. Additional cost
for materials and class
is $2.00.
We
are giving the extra
option to add $1.50 to
your tour price for each
child to choose a bag of
grits of cornmeal to
take home with them as
they leave. This
will allow them to
experience the taste of
what they have learned
from the tour.
